In Alex’s article “Deciphering the Code--Update” what matters is he is revealing how Universal Product code, UPC, helps with checkout at stores. The bars are for the machine to read, and the numbers that are under the bars are the same thing that the machines but it is translated to numbers so that we can read it. GS1 US is the company that assigns the codes for the United States. Jon Mellor the spokesman for GS1 US said that each product has a unique code that contains from 6-9 digits. It is rare to find two codes that are alike, but you may find duplicate codes. The only way you could find duplicate codes is if you bought something from the internet from a different company than the GS1 US. In the article “Deciphering the Code—Update” what matters is Alex is exposing how the GS1 US puts the Universal product code on inventory.
